John (Jack) M. Harty, age 80, of Shelton, passed away July 26, 2017 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Jack was born in Bridgeport to the late John and Katherine Harty. Before his retirement, he was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft for 40 years. He was also a founding member of the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Patient Advisory Board. He was a staunch advocate for patient's rights and was instrumental in the implementation of many patient-friendly policy changes. He served in the Army Reserve and was an avid golfer. He considered his 6 grandchildren to be his greatest accomplishment. He was predeceased by his wife, Maureen French Harty and his brother and sister-in-law James and Peg Harty. Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law, K. Lee and Mark Bishop of Seymour, Erin and Brian Rafferty of Shelton and Maureen and Anthony Pitagora of Trumbull; six grandchildren Michael and Kelly Bishop, Melissa and Allison Rafferty, and Dan and Tommy Pitagora; his sister Kay Spodnick and her husband Frank of Stratford; lifelong dear friends Tom and Mary O'Leary; his sisters and brothers–in–law, Irene Kollar, Geraldine (Gerry) Ellis, Margaret (Peggy) French, Helene and Mike Yurasek, George and Anita French and Mary Beth and David Novotnak and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Jack’s life on August 5th from 12-4 pm, at the Gaelic-American Club, 74 Beach Rd. Fairfield, CT 06824, where there will be a brief memorial service beginning at 12:30. Interment will be private in St. Mary's Cemetery Bethel, CT. Arrangements in care of the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band, PO Box 255 Trumbull, CT 06611, or through the funeral home.
