Susan Berescik Obituary

Susan Jane Berescik

“What would you like people to know about you?” was a question that often came from Susan “Sue” Berescik, 74, formerly of Trumbull, when she worked with her students on college essays. Her yearbook students at Trumbull High School would always hear a similar question, “what would you want to be remembered for?” Her lifelong passion of writing and working with youth to help them improve their own writing and show their true personalities was only seconded to her love of her family and friends. To Susan nothing was more important than her family and she spent her life dedicated to showing them love and support. She was the beloved wife of 52 years to Andrew G. Berescik and the mother to Andrew “Drew” Berescik IV and Tara (Burke) Berescik.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 9, 1947 to the late William Knechtel and Helen Burgers Knechtel, Susan is the oldest of their three daughters. She loved school and playing the piano and excelled at both. She met her future husband Andy, while in attendance at Miami of Ohio, graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Education, and immediately moved to Connecticut to be married and begin her new life. Susan began teaching in 1969 and continued to work within the Trumbull Public School System as an English teacher, homebound tutor, district news coordinator, and/or yearbook advisor until her retirement in 2010. She also served as a writer and editor for the Trumbull Times and other local newspapers. She dedicated her life to her students and considered them an extension of her family. Susan continued to work with business partner Shannon Barth on “Show, Don’t Tell” through 2022 and has helped hundreds of students throughout the country show their best side through creative and engaging writing.

While writing was a passion, Susan also loved to embroider, make crafts, garden, and has a love for nature, especially hummingbirds. Travel has always been a love for Susan and Andy and upon their mutual retirement in 2010 they traveled the country together. Their journeys are chronicled through their blog -https://travelswithsuzi.blogspot.com/ and we invite all to follow the roadmap that they created. Susan began her final new journey on March 7, 2022 surrounded by her husband and children after battling cancer since 1998. She is survived by her husband Andrew, her son Drew, her daughter Tara, Son-in-Law, Michael Burke, sisters Carol Schoenberg of New Mexico and Jean Johnson of Illinois, Sister-in-Law, Dorothy (Berescik) Bizub of Huntington, CT and many wonderful friends and students throughout the country. When asked what she wanted to be remembered for she simply stated – Proud Mother, Loving Wife, True Friend and Accomplished Yearbook Advisor and Teacher.

In lieu of flowers, Susan and her family would like people to be kind and caring to each other and work to make the world a better place, just like Susan tried to do daily.
