Sarah Viola Tyghter

Sarah Viola (Dunbar) Tyghter, age 97, of Bridgeport, CT, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on November 12, 2023. She was born in Oriente, Cuba to the late James and Laura (Frater) Dunbar.  As a child, she moved with her family from Cuba to Jamaica where she went to school and eventually met her husband Sydney Tyghter. Sarah and Sydney immigrated to the United States in 1960, they worked hard to fulfill their goals and built a solid foundation for their children and extended family members. She worked many years at Peoples Bank where she retired over 30 years ago.   

Sarah is predeceased by her husband Sydney Tyghter and daughters Juliet and Carroll and was the last survivor of 9 siblings. She is survived by her loving children Trevor (Pam), Lyndel, Sidney Jr. (Vivian), Maria (Ted) Lemon, Myrth, Faith, Sara; grandchildren Alexander, Alissa, Catherine, Elizabeth, Garey, Jonas, Jonathan, Marianne, Maya, Monique, Patrick, Philippa, Robert, Sydney, Vaughan, and numerous other grandchildren, great grandchildren; and countless nieces and nephews.  

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed baking for her family, church family, and friends. Sarah was known for her Jamaican fruit cake and her famous rum punch that everyone loved. She was a dedicated and active member of St. John’s Episcopal church for over 60 years where she took great pride in making floral arrangements to decorate the church.  

Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday, November 25th at St. John's Episcopal Church, 768 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. The viewing is at 10:00am with the service  immediately following at 11:00. Interment will follow at Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.
