Robert J. Cooney, age 89, of Trumbull, CT passed away September 13, 2023 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was born in Bridgeport, CT to the late Dennis and Margaret Cooney.
Robert attended St. Augustine School in Bridgeport for his primary education, followed by Fairfield College Preparatory School and Fairfield University for his high school and bachelor's degrees. Robert then obtained his law degree from Georgetown University.
Robert's successful legal career spanned more than 50 years, starting with his admission to practice law in Connecticut in 1960. He clerked at the Connecticut Supreme Court for Justice James E. Murphy, and then worked for the prominent Connecticut law firm Pullman & Comley until co-founding Williams, Cooney & Sheehy, which he operated alongside his partners and colleagues for a number of years. In 2011, he joined the McElroy Deutsch Law Firm, where he worked until retiring in 2016. Robert was a longtime member of the Bridgeport Bar Association and served as its president from 1983-1984. He was also inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1986.
He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Mary (Stack) Cooney of Trumbull, CT, his devoted son Robert R. Cooney and his wife Rebecca of London, England, his stepdaughter Donna J. Lapolt and her husband Mark of Oxford, CT and his three cherished grandchildren Kaitlynn, Alexa and Ryan. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Cooney.
Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral services on Thursday, September 21st at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave., Trumbull. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull, CT. Friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, September 20th from 4-7 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull, CT. There will be an additional opportunity to pay respects prior to the funeral at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home.
