Mary McAmis Smith Obituary

Mary McAmis Smith, age 93, of Shelton, CT passed away January 23, 2025. She was born in Greeneville, TN to the late James and Frances McAmis. She was the English-speaking Principal at the Amerikan Kiz Licesi in Istanbul, Turkey for five years. After her husband John's death she travelled in Ireland, Austria, Denmark, and Italy, where she made a pilgrimage to St. Francis' monastery in Assisi. She also taught English at a Lutheran school in Slovakia for a year.

Mary was active in Christ Lutheran Church at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, especially in Baltimore Outreach Services (its women and children's shelter), and the church's program sponsoring immigrant families. In her free time she attended concerts at the Baltimore Symphony and Glimmerglass Opera, and enjoyed reading, needlepoint, travel, and birdwatching. Her smile was infectious and she will be greatly missed.
