Mary Louise Kane of Trumbull, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2022. She was born in Bridgeport on December 19, 1931. She was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Mary Cervenansky. She was educated in Bridgeport schools, beginning with St. Patrick School, then on to Central High School, graduating in 1949 with high honors, sixth in her class. She studied for her teaching degree at New Haven State Teachers College, graduating 1953 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She taught at Roosevelt School in Bridgeport for eight years while attending Fairfield University to attain a Master of Arts Degree in Secondary Education.
In 1961 she went on to teach English at Harding High School for five years. She then decided to study for a degree in Library Science. She achieved a Master’s Degree in Library Science at Simmons College in Boston and served as a media specialist at Wilbur Cross Elementary, then Central High School for twelve years. While at Central she participated in the “1979 Teachers’ Strike” as one of the 300 teachers sent to Camp Hartel in Windsor Locks. Her career as media specialist ended in 1987 at Bassick High School when she retired.
Upon retirement she worked part time at Consolidated Management in Westport for twenty-six years and also at B&G Piping Company in Milford, starting in 2003 until the present. She enjoyed office work, having also worked summers in the office at St. Vincent's Hospital.
Her summer vacations included studying abroad. She took courses in literature in both London and Ontario. In Austria she studied German. Other adventures took her to Ireland, skiing in Colorado and Switzerland and a cruise to the Panama Canal. The most wonderful experience was her 2012 trip to the Holy Land.
She was a devoted parishioner of St. Theresa’s Church in Trumbull, teaching religious classes for seven years, assisting the children’s choir, and participating in the adult choir for 40 years. The choir meant a great deal to her.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William, who she met as a member of St. Patrick’s choir when they participated in the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II. They were alike in so many ways, in their love of music and animals, which resulted in the care of three dogs and many cats. The long lives of their animals can be attributed to their loving care but also to the excellent service of veterinarian David Basak-Smith and his family at Monroe Town & Country Veterinary Hospital.
She was also predeceased by her parents and beloved aunts, Frances Leonard and Helen Brackett.
She is survived by her sisters: Frances Bushinsky, Elizabeth Gasparrini, Dorothy Friedland (Philip), nephews, Joseph (Michelle) Gasparrini, Thomas (Laurie) Gasparrini, Karl (Pamela) Gasparrini, Eric (Theresa) Friedland, Stephen (Jennifer) Friedland; nieces, Susan (David) Quigley, Janet (Kevin) Zupkus, Laura (James) McCarthy, Nancy (Joseph) Pauline; step-children, Nancy Gillespie, Cathleen (Karl) Stillman, William Kane and many grand nieces and nephews.
