Marguerite Carr Obituary

Margaret Carr lovely known as Marge, aged 93, of Monroe, passed away on February 4th, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones in her family home in Trumbull, Born in the Bronx to Hungarian immigrants on August 6th, 1929 -the cusp of the stock market crash.

Margie spent her childhood in New York being a protective older sister to her brother Tony. Their apartment was located across the street from the Bronx Zoo. Marge and Tony would partake in many adventures together, nearly all of which revolved around Marge's mischievous nature, and her unwavering love for her brother the “good one”. One of those adventures that she often talked about was the time her brother and her would take in sick animals from the zoo, bring them home, and rehab them in the family tub. Stories of her father walking all the way to Long Island to look for work at the height of The Great Depression. Despite the typical hardship of the time, the family was still able to spend summers with their grandparents on their farm in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

As time went on Margie found her first love and ultimately heartbreak, with classical training in Ballet. As a renowned ballet dancer, she was sought after by the Premier Ballet Master of the Soviet Union, giving her the opportunity to study in The Soviet Union. However, during her performance at The Winter Garden, the dream of studying to be a prima ballerina was taken from her with the bombing of pearl harbor the same day as her performance.

The FBI would later come knocking on their apartment door questioning the reason for the Soviet Union connection. Being from a world that was already not kind to immigrants her mother forbade her from dancing again out of fear for her family safety . This disapproval would also follow her many proposals on the streets of NYC to be put in movies, tv shows and to pose as a stocking model. To which her mother replied “only Bums are on TV”. She was forever heartbroken by this loss.

The family moved to Trumbull, CT in the 1950s,building the family home together one stone at a time. It was there that Marge married the love of her life George Carr and father to her only daughter Lisa. George Carr, also from the Bronx raised their daughter Lisa together in Monroe until Lisa was eleven years old. When sadly Margie became a young widow. Becoming a single working mother, vowing to make sure her daughter and family would never go without. Marge helped grow the family businesses as a bookkeeper, Cornell-Carr Company, and Winnick Steal into premier industrial manufacturers.

Margie had a love for gardening and entertaining, which she acquired from her mother. As an accomplished cook, she would host gatherings at her house and serve meals that would rival any five-star restaurant. Her yard, of course, was more like a park, with lush, colorful gardens and landscaped walkways. She loved animals and would take in any stray that crossed her path; as well as collecting a parade of “lost” teenagers she welcomed with open arms into her home - lifelong friends of her daughters, who would return the love with her final days at home, for whom the family is forever grateful.

Marge made and maintained life-long friendship, but perhaps the most important one was the one she shared with her younger brother, Tony. They were often thought of as one and inseparable. When Tony passed in October of 2022, it was inevitable that Marge would soon follow.

We imagine that Margie entered heaven the way she entered a room - larger than life, bursting in with love, and proclaiming her arrival with a few "colorful" words. After briefly scolding Tony for getting there before her, she would be sweeping all of her friends, family, and long-lost animals into her arms, dancing off with all of them to a never-ending dinner party.

Margie was Predeceased by her infant son Craig Carr, Husband George Carr, and her brother Tony Cornell . She is survived by her devoted daughter Lisa Gangnath and her husband Philip; three loving grandchildren Philip, Kelsey, and Michael and great grandson Philip Finley, and Fur great grand-babies Joesph, Penny Lane and Love.
