Margaret Ellen Forno (“Peggy”), age 94 of Stratford, Connecticut, formerly of Trumbull went home to be with her Lord on February 1, 2025 after a brief illness. She was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 19, 1930 to Marie Schwab O’Brien and Maurice Joseph O’Brien.
After graduation from Central High School in Bridgeport, Peggy attended and graduated as a registered nurse (which she was extremely proud of) from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing. She worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital until becoming a mom in 1953. Once she became a mom, she devoted herself to caring full time for her family.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 72 years, Albert P. Forno. Together they raised their five children (in the home that Albert built in Trumbull), namely, Katheen Marovic (Michael), Sharon Leidy (Robert), Nancy Ellen Heinrich (Stephen), Cynthia Calzone (Richard) and James Forno (Maureen). Peggy was grandmother to 12, great grandmother to 20 and a great great grandmother to one. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Sharnick and predeceased by her brother, Donald O’Brien and sister, Beverly Anton. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Peggy and her husband, Al, were one of the original parishioners of the St. Catherine of Siena Church in Nichols, Connecticut. She was a long-time member of the St. Catherine of Siena Church Ladies Guild, the St. Catherine of Siena Church Friendship Club, the Trumbull Center Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Gaelic-American Club and the Slim Approach Weight Class.
Being very proud of her Irish roots, she and Al traveled to Ireland 13 times exploring and connecting with family.
Known for her hospitality and baking, no one ever left hungry from Peggy and Al’s home. If you were sick or had a death in the family, they would be on your doorstep with a homemade meal of “southern shortcake” and the fixings. Anyone who visited was offered a cup of tea no matter what time of the day it was!
Peggy’s specialty was her homemade, award-winning Apple Pie that will certainly be missed by all.
Hearts are heavy and saddened at this very deep loss, but joyful because today, Peggy will be dancing (which she loved to do) on streets of gold in Heaven.
The family is extremely thankful for the loving, private duty care provided by Laura Jean Finelli over the past number of months. They are also very thankful for the medical professionals at Spring Village at Stratford Assisted Living and Caring Hospice. God bless the caregivers and nurses (Corine, Cat and Andrea) who were a part of making Peggy’s passing peaceful and calm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peggy’s name can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Caring Hospice Services (Attention Nicole Barrett), 456 Glenbrook Road, 2nd Floor, Stamford, CT 06906.
