Käthe Schneider Obituary

Käthe (Katie) Gastel Schneider, age 101, of Bridgeport, beloved wife of the late Eugene Schneider, passed away on May 8, 2022. Born on July 14, 1920, in Durrwangen Balingen Germany, she was a daughter of the late Christian and Katharine (Rau) Gastel. She moved to the United States to join her sister in 1936. First and foremost, Katie was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother (Oma) and great grandmother. She cherished her family very much, and always knew how to keep the family circle one of strength and love. In addition to always giving of herself to those in need within her immediate family, Katie continued doing the same for many others.
She was an early volunteer for Connecticut's first private agency for persons with special needs, now known as the Kennedy Center.  She fondly remembered watching the kids while her husband built a fence so the kids could go outside. She was one of the first women to open and work at ‘Nearly New’, a thrift store selling seconds from Warner Brothers, raising money for the Kennedy Center. She was part of a unique group of dedicated volunteers- The G.R.A.S.P Auxiliary-whose hard earned funds supported recreational activities, holiday gifts and charitable responses to the residents of the Ella T Grasso Center.  Katie was a member of the Women’s Fellowship at Unity Hill Church, serving as treasurer for many years.
In addition to volunteer work, her hobbies included gathering her family together every Sunday with cooking and baking, sewing, knitting, gardening and playing pinochle with her friends and family. She also loved to travel, especially home to Germany to visit her family.
Survivors include two loving sons, Robert E. Schneider & his wife Barbara of Trumbull, and Ronald K. Schneider, of Monroe, two cherished grandchildren, Brandon Schneider and his wife Jennifer, and Lauren Gagliardi and her husband John Jr., four adored great grandchildren, Logan, Derek, Lillian & Ethan, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by daughter Lenore G., sisters Frieda Foehrenbach, Eva, Klara and Emilie as well as her step-brother Karl.
Her funeral will be held on Friday at 10:15  a.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull and at 11:00 a.m. at Unity Hill Church, 364 White Plains Rd.,  Trumbull, with Pastor Todd Shipley officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday evening  from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home.
