Joan Caliendo Obituary

Joan M. Caliendo, 90, of Trumbull, CT passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Born on January 1, 1936, to Angeline and Joseph Aurilio, Joan was the first baby born in Bridgeport that year. She grew up in Bridgeport and spent cherished summers in Lordship with her family, surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. Joan graduated from Our Lady of Mercy - Lauralton Hall in 1953, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Albertus Magnus College, and later received a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from Fairfield University.

Joan dedicated 32 years of her life to St. Joseph High School, where her children and four of her grandchildren would later attend. An exceptionally intelligent and accomplished educator, she served in numerous roles throughout her career, including Spanish teacher, Director of Guidance, and ultimately Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. She retired in 2000 after a distinguished career marked by leadership, compassion, and a commitment to excellence. St. Joseph High School provided Joan with lifelong friendships and deep professional fulfillment, and she left a lasting impact on generations of students, faculty, and staff.

Joan shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Edward F. Caliendo. Together they raised their four children at Pinewood Lake in Trumbull, CT. She lived there for more than forty years before moving to Oronoque Village in Stratford, CT.

An avid golfer, Joan spent many happy seasons playing with the “18 Holers” and enjoying afternoons with friends. She became a Legacy Member of Mill River Country Club after more than fifty years of membership.

Of all her accomplishments, Joan treasured none more than being “Nana” to her eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Whether hosting Sunday dinners featuring pasta and meatballs, attending games, recitals, swim meets, graduations, christenings, and weddings, or casual afternoons by the pool, Nana was always at the center of it all. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to family, her generous spirit, and the traditions she lovingly carried forward through generations.

Joan is survived by her children, Karen Corcoran, Mary Rather (Jon), Edward Caliendo (Terry), and Amy Threshie. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Jane Lane (Daniel), Jonathan Rather (Jane), Molly Noonan (Garrett), Rose Rather (Ashley), Casey DeLaurentis (Jay), Anna Caliendo (fiancé Jake Granito), Joan Coughlin (Daniel), Patrick Corcoran, Ryan Corcoran, Edie Threshie, and Charlie Threshie. She was also the treasured great-grandmother of Daniel, Caroline, Teddy, and Connor Lane; Jonathan, Margaret, and Ryan Rather; Hudson and Grant Noonan; and Hayes, Graham, and Charlotte DeLaurentis.

She is also survived by her devoted sister Patricia Della Vecchia and brother Joseph Aurilio, her loving sisters-in-law Joy Noonan (James) and Mary Jane Byrnes, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Edward and her son-in-law, Patrick Corcoran.
