Janice Weyls Moore Obituary

Janice Weyls Moore passed away peacefully surrounded by her family including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the stroke of midnight on December 7th, 2023.  While it was difficult for her to depart, a grander party awaited.

Janice was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on May 27th, 1931. She moved with her parents, Russell and Verele (Peggy) Weyls and brother Robert (Bob) when she was 2 years old, settling in Connecticut during the depression.  The seeds for a strong work ethic were planted at an early age and set the stage for her life ahead.

At age 12, she met the love of her life Wayne, at Pinewood Lake in Trumbull, CT,  where her best friend, Beverly Fraser’s parents owned a cabin that she frequented with her family. Wayne would often swim the lake while she would row her boat beside him, teasing him by saying:  “I can row faster than you can swim”.

After graduating from Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield Connecticut, she went on to Lasell Junior college in Boston, joining the rowing team. Wayne was accepted onto the Yale swim team. After college Janice pursued her career in retail, often commuting into New York City.  Wayne, of course, was smitten with this beautiful, curly black haired girl and very soon after he graduated, proposed to Janice under a covered bridge in Kent, Connecticut. Wayne was drafted into the army for the Korean War immediately following graduation. Six weeks later, after a magical candlelit wedding ceremony and celebration, they were off to boot camp in Arkansas and then on to California.  These were blissful years, they had very little money but cherished their life together, sharing ice cream sodas when they could afford them.

When the war was over, Janice and Wayne settled in Nichols, CT and started a family. Wayne began his career at his family’s Machine Tool and Die Company, Moore Special Tool.  They eventually built a saltbox home that became an oasis for family, friends and anyone in need, her door was always open. It was a den of orchestrated chaos, with 5 children and a menagerie of animals.  The produce of Wayne’s organic gardens would make its way into the kitchen where Janice would work side by side with him, she humming and he whistling while they prepared a legacy of culinary dishes. They were devoted to their family.  Wayne always said that he and Janice complemented each other, he admired and loved her completely. Her career was not only with her family of 7 but also as a host, planning events and preparing home cooked meals for many of the Machine Tool and Die guests from around the world. Jan loved to entertain and her friendships ran deep, from the infamous bowling group to her many close friends from NUMC.

Church was the cornerstone of Janice’s life and even at a very young age, she would walk to church by herself every Sunday. She was an active member of the Nichols United Methodist Church for close to 70 years. She served her community in countless ways and gave to others unconditionally.

She leaves a legacy of 5 children, 16 grandchildren, their spouses and 7 great grandchildren, all greatly cherished.  Departing this earth was a difficult choice but she had a bigger party to attend to.  Afterall, she had sent the invitations long ago.

She is survived by her devoted children Coliene Moore of VT, Wayne (Skip) Moore Jr. (Elene) of CT, Jennifer Puffenberger (Jeffrey) of VA, John Moore (Kimberly) of CT and David Moore (Janet Fairchild) of VT; sixteen loving grandchildren, Michael, Dane, Wade (Stacy), Russell (Natalie), Hayes, Colton, Keelea, Jake (Brittany), Jessica (Paul), Julia, Colin (Emily), Brendan, Liam (Kristin), Benjamin, Joshua and Jacob; seven cherished great grandchildren Kenslee, Silas, Violet, Rowan, Lilienne, Teagan, William and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. directly at the Nichols United Methodist Church, 35 Shelton Rd. Trumbull, CT.
