Hope Tarbox Obituary

Hope Ellis Tarbox, 84, of Trumbull, CT passed away peacefully June 13, 2026, at her home. She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, James Sidney Tarbox, and her daughters, Joy Tarbox (Chris Sutherland) and Julie Ichikawa (Jeffrey Ichikawa).

Hope grew up in Tiverton, RI, daughter of the late Earl and Elizabeth Ellis and sister of the late Alan Ellis.

She graduated from The University of Vermont with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and completed a master’s degree in education at the University of Bridgeport. She taught high school and elementary school for several years.

For 58 years Hope was an active member of the Nichols United Methodist Church where she was a teacher for more than 20 years at the church Mother’s Day Out program, serving as Director of the program for 18 years. She also helped publish the church newsletter and served as an active member of United Methodist Women. Through her work, Hope had a positive impact on countless parishioners, families, and children.

Hope also volunteered as Treasurer of the Board of Grants at Bridgeport Hospital, where she and colleagues made recommendations for the distribution of gifts and donations.

Whether in the kitchen or sewing room her skill and talent came through. She was a lover of the culinary arts and drew pleasure from sharing the fruits of her labor with others. A lifetime passion for textiles and handwork began with her mother and was passed down to her daughters. Hope was an avid reader throughout her life, frequenting her local libraries and visiting independent bookstores during her travels.

Hope and Jim spent many summers at the family home in Rhode Island where, with family and guests, they enjoyed sailing, kayaking, and taking in the view in classic Adirondack chairs.

Hope will be remembered for her kindness and her generosity. For many she was one of the very special people in their lives, and she will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Hope’s memory can do so through the Tiverton Library Foundation https://www.tivertonlibraryfoundation.com or The Nichols United Methodist Church.
