Herbert S. Gratrix of Trumbull passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born in Bridgeport to the late Herbert and Frances (Bixby) Gratrix and was a graduate of Bassick High School, Butler Business School, and the University of Bridgeport.
Herb worked at A.H. Nilson Machine Co. where he met Helen, his wife of 61 years. He then worked as an accountant at AVCO Lycoming/Textron/Allied Signal in Stratford. He always said he took that job until he could find something better but then stayed for over 33 years. He liked to joke that after he retired, they closed the plant.
Herb took great pride in the family's home that he and Helen designed. He built porches, laid sidewalks, upholstered furniture, remodeled bathrooms, and planted gardens. Home maintenance and landscaping were his labors of love.
An avid volunteer, Herb's service centered around his faith. He was a longtime, active member of the Bethany Congregational and Trumbull Congregational churches. Herb also was involved in the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport for over 30 years. He served on the Board of Directors and generously donated his time and talents particularly to programs benefiting youth. He received the 2006 Community Builder Award and was touted as "the 'go-to' guy whenever [they] needed thoughtful insights or someone handy with a hammer."
Herb was a family man, a proud and supportive father who enjoyed spending time with his daughters, attending their activities, and taking countless photos and videos. Always a gentleman, he modeled a strong work ethic, benevolence, and attention to detail.
Herb was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen and his brother Alfred Gratrix, Sr. He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Elaine Gratrix and her husband Andrew Lopson, and Karen Gratrix; his nephews Alfred Gratrix, Jr. (Nancy Austin) and Edward Gratrix (Danielle) and their children Jacob and Matthew.
Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral service on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trumbull Congregational Church, 3115 Reservoir Ave. Trumbull, CT. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull.
