Bertram J. Hopper Jr.

October 15, 1922 ~ April 20, 2022 (age 99)

Obituary

Bertram John Hopper, Jr, son of the late Bertram John Hopper, Sr and Marion Finn Hopper, was born in New York City on Oct. 15, 1922 and passed peacefully in Trumbull, CT on April 20, 2022. He began high school at the LaSalle Academy and was a gifted student. Recognizing his potential, the monsignor of his church recommended him to Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, CT where he graduated at the top of his class in mathematics and earned a full scholarship to Yale University.  Under a special war-time program, he spent his senior year at the Naval Academy at Annapolis and was graduated in 1944 from Midshipman School at Annapolis and Yale.  He was stationed for the duration of the war in Hawaii, where he served at First Lieutenant and Ship’s Engineer on the USS Corregidor, an escort carrier. After the war, he began his career as a chemical engineer for several companies, including General Electric and Crawford and Russell, known later as Constructors John Brown, in Stamford, CT. As a chemical engineer, he worked both in the US and Europe, spending a good deal of time on assignment in Holland and Great Britain.

Bertram married the love of his life, Virginia Ann Snow, in 1947 and together they raised their family, Charles, Claire and Dorothy, in New York, Massachusetts, Indiana and Connecticut.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a quiet, humble and reserved man of great intellect and curiosity. He loved a good story or joke and to reminisce about his youth in NYC and family. He was honest and forthright and stood firm in his convictions. He was the type of person who never said “No,” always available to help and support where needed.  He was able to fix anything and everything, and was the first call for electrical, plumbing, general repairs and consultation. He viewed every problem as a challenge to solve and there was nothing he liked so much as a challenge, spending hours on research and study. He doodled, on graph paper, mathematical equations and chemical processes, and his slide rule and calculator were usually nearby. His keen mind led him to study many topics and teach himself new things.  He was an avid chess and bridge player, liked to tinker with cars, do various experiments, and loved joining math forums online and, over the years, studied the Dutch, German, and French languages. He also loved horse racing and enjoyed going to the track with his son-in-law. He tutored high school students in Latin and Math. He also loved to play golf. In his retirement, he did not like to be idle. He became a bus driver for the school district and really enjoyed being a delivery person for his son-in-law and daughter’s drug store, Lupe’s in Bridgeport, CT.  He also loved being a handyman at his church, Long Hill United Methodist Church, Trumbull CT, where he had served as a trustee. Bertram was also Past Master of Fidelity Lodge, AF and AM, and several times Past Patron of Rhea Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Bertram is survived by his daughters, Claire Ervin and her husband, Craig, of Fairfield, CT and Dorothy Lupariello and her husband, Daniel, of Shelton, CT.  Also, his granddaughters, Sarah Hubert (John) of Trumbull, CT and Kristin Maier of Des Plaines, IL, and his grandsons, Gregory Hopper of Altamonte Springs, FL, Kyle Hopper of Mount Dora, FL, and Frank Lupariello of Shelton, CT.  Also, his great-grandchildren, John Hubert III of Milford, CT, Craig and Analise Hubert of Trumbull, CT, and Maria (Mia) Maier of Des Plaines, IL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Bertram was pre-deceased by his wife, Virginia, and his son, Charles Hopper of Greenwich, CT and his brother, Donald Hopper of New York City.
