Bernard J. Sherlip M.D.

Bernard J. Sherlip M.D., age 93 passed away on March 17th at his home in Fairfield. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Oscar and Paula (Polly) Sherlip. Bernard received his B.A. from New York University and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his residency in family medicine at Bridgeport Hospital and then served in the U.S. Navy as a physician. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he established a family medical practice in Trumbull in 1958 with the late Dr. Herman Austrian. He also served as President of the Bridgeport Medical Society for 2 years. After practicing medicine for over 50 years, he reluctantly retired from private practice. To continue on with his passion for medicine, Bernard then volunteered for several years at the primary care clinic at Bridgeport Hospital where he treated patients and worked with residents and other physicians.  

In his free time, Bernard could often be found playing poker at either the Mohegan Sun or Foxwood Casino for hours at a time. He also greatly enjoyed driving his Porsche, collecting stamps and watching the Yankees and Rangers.

Bernard had an incredible memory that never faded over time, and his family will sorely miss being regaled by his prolific storytelling. The family will also miss his constant movie recommendations, even though most of those recommendations were for films produced before 1960. 

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Kathryn Sherlip. He is survived by his loving daughters Susanne Mehlman (Wayne) of Rockville, Maryland and Joy Hultman (Stephen) of Basking Ridge, NJ; and four cherished grandchildren, Danielle and Ross Mehlman and Timothy and Lindsay Hultman.
