Richard J. McCarthy, 83 years old, of Monroe, died peacefully at Branford Hospice on August 25, after a long illness. Rick, as he was known, was born on October 23, 1934 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1952 and attended St. Michael's College in Winooski, VT. Rick served two years in the Army as a medical aid man. After moving to Fairfield in 1962 he was employed at Jenkins Valve Co. in Bridgeport and later by Carpenter Steel until retirement. In retirement he drove a school bus for eleven years for Monroe school district. Additionally he was an avid golfer. Rick served as vice president of the Greater Bridgeport Area Council on Alcoholism in the nineteen seventies. For more than 54 years he devoted himself to carrying the message to recovery to those in need. He was predeceased by his parents James A. McCarthy and Norene Dunny McCarthy, a brother James A. McCarthy Jr.. He is survived by his sister, Sr. Maureen McCarthy, OSU of New Rochelle, NY, a daughter Carolyn of Vancouver, WA and a loving dear friend and companion of many years Elaine Hawie Chedister of Fairfield. Friends are invited to greet the family on Wednesday August 29, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull.
