Richard Edward Schlegel

Richard Edward Schlegel, age 86, of Fairfield, CT, passed away December 14, 2018 at Bridgeport Hospital. Mr. Schlegel was born in Dubuque, Iowa to the late Harold and Mary Schlegel. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and had a distinguished career as a corporate executive at The General Electric Company.  He proudly served our country as a U.S. Marine during the Korean Conflict.  An active member of the community, he served on the board at the Thomas Merton House, was past president of the Brooklawn Country Club and served as board member, Eucharistic minister and lector at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Trumbull. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marna Lois (O'Brien) Schlegel of Fairfield, CT; four loving children Stephen and his wife Elena Schlegel of New Canaan,CT, Elizabeth Schlegel Benyon of Fairfield, CT, Richard Peter Schlegel of Austin, TX and Sarah and her husband Matthew McCrann of Hanover, MA; two sisters Sally Kressin and Betty Haverland both of Iowa; eight cherished grandchildren Jack Schlegel, Abigail Benyon, Matthew Schlegel, Kaden Schlegel, Grace Benyon, Brian McCrann, Madeline McCrann and Ted McCrann and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother George Schlegel, his sister Catherine Schlegel, his granddaughter Katherine Schlegel and his grandson Thayer Schlegel. Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. directly at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Dr. Fairfield, CT for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment to follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Bronson Rd. Fairfield with full military honors. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd.
