Donald William Smith of Trumbull, beloved husband of Diane Marie (Beninco) Smith, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2018 at CT Hospice in Branford. Born in Bridgeport on April 30, 1931, the son of the late Hazel (Mahan) and Frank Smith, Don had been a resident of Trumbull since 1955. He proudly served his country as a Marine in the Korean War. Upon his return he joined the Benny Tile Co. and worked as a tile contractor until his retirement in 1993. Don loved music and relished telling stories of playing the trumpet and, with his father, seeing big-name acts such as Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway in the Bridgeport theaters. He was a long-suffering Brooklyn Dodgers fan who shared his love of baseball with his sons. His playfulness and sense of humor will be remembered with great love and appreciation by his grandchildren. He was an active member of the Trumbull VFW Post 10059.
In addition to Diane, his loving wife of 63 years, Don is survived by their children, Cathleen Smith of Madison; Donald Smith Jr. and his wife Anna of Guilford and their children Emma, Benjamin, Charlotte and William; Julie Smith DeMaio of Woodbridge and her son Jonathan; Douglas Smith of Trumbull; his devoted sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Ralph Keese of Trumbull; his beloved nieces Sharon Tilley, Susan Keese, and Sally Ferri and their families. Don leaves behind dear cousins, grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son, David. Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull. Friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Church, 6948 Main St. Trumbull. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 or at www.hospice.com.
